Still Jet Setting!

In class 9, on Shrove Tuesday, we carefully measured and weighed the pancake ingredients using scales. We watched as Lynda fried the pancakes. Abbie and Mrs McConnell skilfully tossed them in the air! Finally, we chose chocolate spread or golden syrup and added fresh fruit toppings. We rolled our pancakes and ate them up!  Mmmmm delicious!

Jet setting around the World (Part 2).

After Africa, we ‘flew’ to the other side of the World and visited Australia/Oceania.

In art, we looked at Aboriginal style paintings and created our own designs using silhouettes of Australian animals and lots and lots of dots. Can you name a marsupial? We can! We made life cycles of koalas and kangaroos. Can you name a baby marsupial? We can!                          We loved finding all about the underwater creatures in the Great Barrier Reef!

We made Aboriginal style rain sticks and filled them with rice - then we used them in our music session!

Our next stop was the biggest continent in the World – Asia!  Our first stop off was China. We used an atlas to find Asia. We found China and India on the map of Asia.

In Lego Therapy, our task was to build a long wall just like the Great Wall of China -but it didn’t take us over 2,000 years to build ours! We each made a part, then as a group, we put all of sections together to create a Great Class 9 Wall!

We compared the food in China to our favourite foods at home. We tried egg fried rice, noodles, seaweed, prawn crackers and fortune cookies. The egg fried rice was voted Class 9’s favourite!  We found out about the traditions around Chinese New Year. We crafted our own dragons, following instructions and using cutting skills. We performed a dragon parade outside; it was such fun!

In Maths, we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We used ‘shape finder’ lenses to find 2D shapes around school - circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon and square. We named and identified 3D shapes around our classroom – Odin compared the wooden ball to a globe of the World! We practised our number bonds to 10 using Numicon by exploring the combination of shapes to make 10 then we wrote the number sentences. We also counted pennies to match an amount. Next, we shopped in our own Chinese takeaway! We are now exploring the value of different coins and adding to 10 and beyond.

The next stop on our journey was India! It is also in the continent of Asia.

In literacy, we explored Indian cuisine and described the flavours and textures of samosas, pakoras, poppadoms and garlic naan bread.

We dressed up in beautiful traditional clothes and we all had a try at some BHANGRA dancing! It was a lot of fun!

We looked at the wonderful building – the Taj Mahal. Did you know it took 20 years to build it? We used a range of mediums to paint the background. We also created a ‘henna’ design on a handprint, using patterns, and a fine felt tip pen.

We had a whistle stop tour of North and South America, looking at landmarks of North America like the Statue of Liberty; and the Amazon Rainforest in South America. The creatures are spectacular, like the Golden Lion Tamarind Monkey – it looks just like a lion!

We have finished by exploring where WE live. We can now name the 4 countries of the UK and we know the capital city of the UK is London. We made beautiful Big Ben suncatchers. We wrote our own addresses on our Easter card envelopes, then we walked to our local post box to send them home and made a map of our journey.

We had a fabulous trip on the metro to South Shields and the sun shone on us all day! We had such fun in the amazing play areas and had a picnic together too!
