Robots, Romeo & Revolution
Publishing and Showcasing
Once our non-chronological reports of the Galapagos archipelago were complete, we published them using a word processing programme. We learned to format the documents in a formal style and how to accurately search for and select appropriate images for the report. Class 6 were incredibly proud of them and were overjoyed to have the opportunity to share them with Class 3, who are great admirers of unique animals, in our incredible library.
Marvellous Mapping
We continued our learning journey through the time of the Industrial Revolution by studying the changes to the local area across this time period. We learned to use an eight-pointed compass and six figure grids in order to locate features on historical and modern maps. We explored land used changes in Felling and the surrounding area from 1854 onwards. By drawing on evidence from the maps, we could observe changes in the population through a boom in residential land use and the decline of industrial activity focused on gathering the natural resources of clay, stone and coal.
A Shakespearean Adventure
In our reading lessons, we explored classic playscripts from Shakespeare. We particularly found ourselves thrilled by the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet. We learned to interpret the older style of English by considering the context of the events, character emotions and themes. We wrote a summary of this tale in order to help us follow the events in Ballet performance of it at Dance City. The artists were incredibly talented. Everyone was absolutely gripped by the events they played out before us. We interpreted character emotions from their expressions and movements alongside the representation from the music.
Safetyworks!
Class 6 were invited to take part in a series of workshops and role play activities at Safetyworks. It’s an amazing place where people who work across many services, such as paramedics and police, give their time to help us make safe choices when out in our community. For example, some workshops included out road safety, water safety and what to do if you witness a fire. These heroic key workers also helped us to consider how to deal with peer pressure and online safety.
VEX IQ
Our VEX IQ team have proudly completed their first robot build for this year’s competition! We were thrilled to be able to test it out and look for aspects of its design that we could improve in order to make the robot more competitive. Last season, we made it to the national event. We won an award for our robot build. Wish us luck for this season!
