Ready for Battle

Class 9 bounced into the summer term ready to tackle all challenges ahead!

First up, we got ‘battle ready,’ by designing our very own shields and swords. We carefully painted these and then we drew magnificent dragons to decorate our masterpieces!

In PE, we re-enacted a battle scene and had great fun jousting with each other. We marched to the beat of the drum and even challenged our teachers – of course the young knights defeated the elders!

In literacy, we have been exploring ‘Traditional Tales’ involving princesses, castles, knights and dragons! We have enjoyed lots of stories including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the Princess and the Pea, and Beauty and the Beast. We described fantasy pictures of dragons, magical castles and have retold the stories, using masks, costumes and role play. We loved performing for classes 7 and 8!

We created our own magic potions to wake up Sleeping Beauty using rose petals, gems, feathers and bubbles –we chose a name for our potion, such as ‘Happy Hugs’! We made invitations to the Royal Ball using our phonics knowledge to write our own sentences. We wrote a ‘wanted poster’, where Prince Charming described Cinderella. We hunted high and low for Cinderella’s slipper in our forest! Look at our fabulous maps!

In Maths, we have become experts in counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to 20 and even up to 100! We have enjoyed role play in our classroom castle, counting the King’s golden coins in his treasure box. Next, we explored real money. First, we sorted coins by size, shape and colour. Then, we looked at how much each coin was worth. We explored and identified different coins to 10, we worked out how many 1p, 2p and 5p made a total of 10. We wrote number sentences to show our understanding. We have listened to ‘Mr Double Trouble’ to help us remember our doubles. It really helps when we are adding numbers together! We can count ‘one more’ or ‘less’ than a number too!

In science, we have been exploring chemical reactions. Did you know knights love to fight dragons? We created a ‘dragon inferno’ by using dragon ingredients such as volcanic ash, scaly skin and fizzing fireballs. We had great fun experimenting and watching the potions fizz, bubble and swirl.

We have enjoyed lots of baking opportunities linked to our topic. We have baked bread twists for a medieval banquet, Cinderella iced biscuits linked to Traditional Tales about Princesses and castles and fairy cakes for Cinderella’s ball. The children carefully mixed, weighed and kneaded the dough.

We had a big surprise when a dragon crashed into class 9 - we found a letter from Mammy dragon asking us to look after her egg! We followed footsteps and found a nest on top of our reading den! There was the most magnificent dragon egg and a dragon poo on a beanbag! What a mess! We carefully placed the nest in a warm spot and waited patiently for it to hatch. We had a big surprise when the most beautiful baby dragon was born! We all fell in love!

And finally, we are almost at the end of another fabulous year in Class 9! We are thrilled with just how far our children have come on their learning journey. They have all made incredible progress in so many different ways – phonics, reading, writing, sharing and learning to play with friends, speaking, listening and also asking so many questions! We have loved every moment – watching your child blossom! We have had so much fun along the way and plenty of giggles to keep us all going! We hope you are truly proud of how much your child has grown in all areas. It was absolutely magical to see the children having such a fantastic time at Tynemouth beach, running, splashing and laughing together. The sun shone brightly and the children danced and laughed in the waves!
