'Once Upon a Time...'

This half-term, our Reception class has embarked on an exciting journey of learning, engaging with a variety of activities inspired by some fantastic books. Our experiences have not only been fun but also deeply enriching, fostering a love for stories and exploration.

We kicked off our adventures by making porridge, just like the bears in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." This hands-on activity allowed the children to connect with the story in a meaningful way, as they measured ingredients and discussed preferences—just like Goldilocks!

Next, we ventured outdoors for a leaf hunt, searching for various shapes and colours inspired by the book "Leaf Man." The children were thrilled to discover the unique patterns found in nature, sparking discussions about the changing seasons and our environment.

In our art sessions, we explored vibrant colours through Matisse-inspired leaf artwork, echoing the beautiful greens, oranges and pinks depicted in "Mixed." This not only focused on their artistic skills but also encouraged an exploration of colour.

In observance of Mental Health Day, we practiced huffing and puffing to control our breathing, inspired by the Wolf in "The Three Little Pigs." This activity highlighted the importance of mindfulness and emotional well-being, teaching the children valuable techniques for managing their feelings.

Throughout these activities, the children's enthusiasm for the stories has been infectious, serving as a fantastic springboard for exploring letter sounds, numbers, shapes, patterns, and our understanding of the world around us. We believe that stories are a powerful tool for fostering curiosity and igniting a love for learning.
