Learning Beyond the Classroom!

Year 6 had an incredible week working with IntoUniversity, a charity that inspires young people to think about their future. Over five days, we explored the urgent issue of climate change, learning about inspiring activists like Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough. We discussed the tough decisions needed to tackle global challenges and discovered the wide range of careers linked to sustainability and science. We even visited Tynemouth Aquarium to see first-hand how pollution and climate change affect our oceans and marine life – a powerful reminder of why action matters!

The highlight of the week was our visit to Northumbria University, where we presented projects on our chosen inspirational activist and took part in a special ‘graduation’ ceremony with our families. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate our achievements – your support made the day even more special!

Becoming Sir David Attenborough!

Year 6 have been channelling their inner Sir David Attenborough as part of an exciting writing project inspired by his ‘new’ series, The Galápagos. We explored this magical archipelago, learned fascinating facts about its unique flora and fauna and studied the formal, passive style that makes Attenborough’s narration so iconic. Using detailed writing techniques, we combined rich description with accurate information and experimented with different types of clauses to add depth and detail to our sentences. The best part? We’re soon going to record our scripts in true Attenborough style – a fantastic way to develop presentation and speaking skills while bringing our writing to life! Look out for those soon!

Year 6 Safety Adventure!

Our Year 6 class had an amazing morning at SafetyWorks! where learning came to life in the most practical way possible. From working alongside real firefighters, police officers, Metro staff, and the RNLI, the children explored vital topics like fire safety, road awareness, staying safe around Metro stations and even how to handle peer pressure. Through role-play scenarios, they practiced making 999 calls, learned how to respond in emergencies and discovered the importance of quick thinking and teamwork. It was hands-on, inspiring and packed with fun – a brilliant way to prepare for real-life situations while building confidence and responsibility!

Digging Into History – Life in the Industrial Revolution

To conclude our work on the Industrial Revolution, Year 6 became inventors and history detectives! We designed our own safety lamps, just like George Stephenson did, to try and make mining safer. It was a brilliant way to combine creativity with engineering and understand the importance of innovation during this period.

We explored real census data from the time of mining and uncovered fascinating details about who lived in the homes on Old Fold Road. The area was bustling with life – from miners and farmers to seamstresses, tailors to news reporters – painting a vivid picture of a vibrant community. It was amazing to see how much we could learn about people’s daily lives just by examining historical records.

This work led us to begin our learning within geography, where we began to explore how land use in the area has changed since the Industrial Revolution. Linking history and geography has helped us understand how communities evolve over time and the impact industry has on the places we live.
