Everybody learns, everybody cares

Learning Ahoy!

Class One have had a fantastic start to the summer term. We have explored a range of intriguing topics, including learning about significant figures in our local history, all about plants, created different artworks and much more.

Class 1 Sum 1 24-25

Fabulous Phonics

Phonics has had a big focus in Class One this half term as we approach the Phonics Screening Check in June.  The children should all be so proud of the huge leaps of progress they are making in their reading.  It is a joy to listen to them beginning to read with fluency and expression.  Their phonic learning will enable them to embark on a love of reading, discovering new worlds!

A Heroine of the Seas…

We have been on an exciting adventure to the past this half term through our learning all about Grace Darling. We have learned about her heroic rescue from Longstone Lighthouse, all about her life and what happened to her after she rescued the people from the Forfarshire ship. The children have engaged in role play, created medals to go in a museum and have written about her life.

The Storm Whale

Our book this half term has been the wonderful Benji Davies’ ‘The Storm Whale’. We loved how it linked to our learning in History. The children created their own stories about a child who found an animal on the beach. They used lots of beautiful vocabulary, trying to use adjectives and conjunctions in their sentences.

Outdoor learning

This half term, we have begun our learning about plants in Science. The children have been on plant hunts, have learned the parts of a plant and labelled them, have learned to name some plants in their environment and learned what a plant needs to survive. Next half term, we will be growing our own plants from seeds, as well as harvesting plants that we have been growing since April!

Some children were randomly selected to take part in a pilot of our Forest School provision with Mrs Cawson. They have loved getting to be outdoor adventurers and discovering new skills through their outdoor learning.

Magical Maths

Our Maths is going from strength to strength. The children have loved becoming more fluent with number bonds through the ‘Mastering Number’ programme. They have also started to use arrays to help with groups of numbers (the step before using the multiplication symbol). Some children are beginning to use their times tables alongside this learning. We have learned how to add multiple groups of a number, how to group an amount and how to share an amount. This will help the children lots with their work on fractions next half term.

Amazing Art

We were very lucky to be visited by two university teaching students, who delivered some brilliant Art sessions to us during Mental Health Awareness Week. The lessons were centred around the theme of ‘Community’ and the children’s artwork reflected this: they made masks, self-portraits and clay models to put together in displays of our class community. We discussed being there for one another as a community and learned the song ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ to show that we are friends to each other.

Our class book this half term has been ‘The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me’ by Roald Dahl. We have found it hilarious, strange and interesting!  Mrs Gallon and Miss Nicol are very proud of the children and how hard they work each day.  It is lovely to see them growing in confidence in so many ways.

We hope you have a happy, safe half term.
