Giving 100%
Class 5 have been working really hard this half-term and we can’t wait to share our learning with you all.
Calculating Coordinates
This half term in maths, we have been using our knowledge of position and direction to calculate missing coordinates and translate a range of shapes from one location to another. We have also focused upon our use of mathematical vocabulary to provide directions for our classmates within the classroom. We can’t wait to continue developing our use of mathematical language even more next term!
We have spent a lot of our time this term focusing on calculating equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. We can tell you that 100% refers to the whole amount, 50% is half and 25% is a quarter of this. We can tell you that 75% is equivalent to three quarters as a fraction and would be written as 0.75 as a decimal. To test our knowledge, we worked as a class to complete a domino board. This task required us to work as cooperative cats and made us really think about how we could use our mathematical learning to calculate equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. We now know that 20% is equivalent to one fifth!
Brilliant Biomes
In writing, this half term, we have been writing an explanation text focusing on the six major biomes of our world. We have really focused on our use of technical vocabulary, allowing the reader to become fully immersed in the biome itself and to fully understand what each biome is like. Lucas’s use of technical vocabulary including adapt, extreme, flora and fauna really allow the reader to visualise each specific biome. We have also considered the use of diagrams to visually represent specific features of the biomes. Keisha’s introductory paragraph to explain to the reader what biomes are was wonderful, especially the use of parenthesis to add extra detail for the reader. We have thoroughly enjoyed learning and writing all about biomes this term and can’t wait to publish our work about the forest biome for the rest of school to read. We are hoping to display these in our forest school classrooms as reference materials for when our forest grows.
Scientific Solutions or Mixtures?
We have really enjoyed learning about properties of materials and investigating reversible and irreversible changes. We recently completed a scientific experiment, investigating the effects of water upon a range of materials, including salt, sugar, flour and sand. We used scientific vocabulary (solute, solvent, solution, reversible and irreversible) to discuss the findings of our experiment and considered the variables that we could change in the future. For example, we would use a scale to measure each material prior to the investigation and we would compare the similarities and differences between warm and cold water as a solvent. We are excited to continue using our research skills next term.

You are GOLD!
Well done Hamid who is the first to achieve their gold super learning power this year. Hamid has worked really hard to reach this and should be very, very proud. What a fantastic achievement!
Reading Superstars
We have worked really hard this half-term on our reading. We have continued to hit our reading plus target every few weeks and it has been lovely to see the children’s fabulous engagement with this challenge. Keep it up next term Class 5.
Super Spellings
Well done to Jack and Salome for your hard work and focus during spelling sessions. Keep being perseverant pugs!
Fantastic Swimming
I have been really impressed by the children in Class 5 during their swimming lessons again this half-term. I continue to be amazed by the bravery and perseverance of every single child and it has been lovely to see the children’s positive engagement throughout the year. Well done and keep being brave bears throughout the summer term.
Miss Dinsley and Miss Hopkins are really proud of the children and their hard work this half-term. We are really pleased with how each member of the class continues to take part in our daily problem-solving challenges. Everyone is showing wonderful levels of enthusiasm and a positive competitiveness amongst each other to reach our challenge goal. Fabulous efforts Class 5!
We hope you have a happy Easter break. See you next term!
