Excel-lant Evolution

PC Steve

Class 6 were visited by PC Steve, who we first met at Safetyworks. He taught us about hate crime and online safety. He explained the importance of recognizing and reporting hate crimes, as well as how to stay safe online by protecting our personal information and being mindful of our digital interactions. The session was very informative and helped us understand how to navigate the online world safety and knowing our legal and moral duties around hate crime.

Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution

In our science lessons, we studied adaptation and evolution. We conducted an experiment to explore Charles Darwin's theory of Evolution through Natural Selection. In the enquiry, we had to identify which finch was from which Galapagos Island based on its beak form and the food sources available in these different places. This scientific enquiry activity helped us understand how different environmental factors can lead to the evolution of species over time. We enjoyed testing different beaks and how well they could pick up various shaped objects. This led to use theorising about the origin of the different finches.

Computing – Excel

While exploring evolution in science, we also explored the variation in inherited characters such as hair and eye colour. We surveyed the school population to explore this further and learned to record our data in a Microsoft Excel database. They data base was large with many sub categories to tend with but we were incredibly skilled at constructing the table. We learned to use different formulas to calculate totals and averages, which helped us understand the distribution of these inherited traits within our school community. We found that brown eyes and black hair to be the most common features.

Alma – A Suspense Story

In our writing lessons, we have been crafting suspense stories based on the video, Alma. We focused on immersing the reader by vividly describing the setting and the characters' reactions. We also used conjunctions to add detail and incorporated direct speech to make our stories more engaging. We thoroughly enjoyed acting out scenes and character speech to help us developing our ideas further. Soon, your child will bring their eerie published story home to share with you! Be warned – it’s spooky stuff!

Top Trumpets

Our music teacher, Mr Rushton, visits us every Friday. In his fabulously creative lessons, we have been continuing to develop our skill with the trumpet. We have practiced writing notes on the stave and learned to play different notes with varying dynamics, such as soft and loud. This experience has helped us understand musical notation and how to express emotions through our playing. Our class particularly enjoys it when Mr Rushton showcases the true potential of the trumpet by playing a guess the song section at the end of this lessons! The Star Wars and Harry Potter themes are amongst favourites.

Marvellous Mechanisms

In our design and technology lessons, we have been exploring cams and reciprocal movement so we can design and build a moving toy for Class 2. We are researching their favourite characters to incorporate into the toy's design. This hands-on project is helping us understand the mechanics behind movement and how different components work together to create motion. The children are excited to see their ideas come to life and can't wait to share the final product with Class 2! Some design ideas include Super Mario punching a block to Pepper Pig sailing on a boat.
