Confident Communicators
We have taken part in a STEM project called Dream Big for Engineering. We carried out engineering projects, seeing us become a different kind of engineer each time:
We became:
- software engineers, creating a simple algorithm for someone else to follow;
- marine engineers, creating a boat that could hold the most passengers;
- aerospace engineers, constructing a balloon rocket that would travel along a string for at least a metre;
- civil engineers, constructing a bridge between supports to hold 50g;
We worked together in pairs and groups, developing our speaking and listening skills as we: shared ideas; discussed our choices; explained our decisions; questioned each other; summarised and reported.
We learnt about:
- making eye contact
- using gestures
- using appropriate vocabulary
- choosing the right language for different occasions
- organising our speech
- to present ideas clearly
- working with others
- respectfully agreeing and disagreeing
- taking turns
- developing confidence in speaking
Each engineering challenge came with a STEM themed book that introduced us to significant engineers of the future. Some of us were certainly inspired by the women who contributed greatly to developing airplanes and rockets.
