Everybody learns, everybody cares

Body Experts

In Year 4, we have been learning about the digestive system.  We became human body parts to help us ‘tell the story’ of food’s journey through our bodies. We can name the major body parts involved in digestion and can explain the part they each play in getting our body the water and nutrients it needs as they work to turn food in to poo.

Class 4 Sum1 24-25

In an investigation to discover the effects of different drinks on our teeth, we put eggs in different liquids so we could observe the changes to the shells over time. (Egg shell is similar to the enamel on our teeth.) We made careful observations to discover that the more acid there was in a liquid, the greater the chance there is of tooth decay.  We were both delighted and repulsed by the egg that had been in vinegar for six days – not only did the hard egg shell turn completely soft and squishy, it became transparent before breaking apart. We decided that we certainly didn’t want that to happen to our teeth! We know that sugar turns to acid in the mouth if our teeth are left unbrushed so we learnt a valuable lesson about trying to avoid very sugary drinks and the importance of oral hygiene if we want to keep our teeth healthy.

Reporter  Writers

In order to report on the findings of our science investigation, we have been learning to give a detailed, accurate account of our observations.  We have been able to use scientific language, carefully chosen adjectives, prepositions, subordinating conjunctions and fronted adverbials while learning to use the past perfect tense to describe exactly what had happened to the egg shells over the six days we observed them.

Fabulous Fractions and Dotty Decimals

We have developed our understanding of place value and the number system working with fractions and decimals.  Using chocolate bars, we have learnt the decimal equivalents of ½, ¼ , ¾  and .  Which would you rather have?  ½ a bar or   ?  We know which fraction will give us the greater amount! Although we will certainly be brushing our teeth after devouring any of that sugar!

Gaming Wizards

We have been using a program called ‘Scratch’ which helps us to use code to combine images, movement and sounds to create our own games.  The process of writing algorithms, coding and debugging  has given us a fascinating insight in to the world of computer games.  We are all very keen software engineers, who are very proud of our coding achievements. You may even get to play one of our games on the Nintendo in the future!
