Balancing Brilliance
This half term, year have 4 have been introduced to gymnastics, focusing on balancing and rolling. The children learned how to perform different types of balances and rolls, developing their coordination, strength, and flexibility. Throughout the lessons, the children demonstrated significant progress in their confidence, balance, and ability to work as part of a team.
Balancing
The children explored a variety of balancing exercises, both on the floor and using apparatus such as balance benches. They were taught the importance of maintaining good posture, engaging their core muscles, and staying still to hold a balanced position for 3 seconds.
Rolling
Rolling techniques were a significant part of the gymnastics lessons. The children focused on both forward and backward rolls, practising them on mats to ensure safety and proper technique.
The main rolling skills practiced included:
- Forward Roll: The children learned how to initiate the roll by tucking their chin to their chest, rounding their body, and pushing off with their legs to move smoothly over their heads. They practised rolling in a controlled manner, making sure to land softly on their feet.
- Log Rolls and Side Rolls: These rolls were introduced as fun, introductory movements that helped students build confidence in their rolling skills while focusing on body control.
It is clear that they have gained a strong foundation in these fundamental gymnastic skills, which will provide a solid base for more advanced gymnastics techniques in the future.
