Music

Intent

At Bede Community Primary School, our music curriculum is designed to foster a deep appreciation for diverse musical styles, cultivate creative expression, and develop essential musical skills. We aim to inspire a lifelong love for music, encouraging pupils to explore, create, and connect with music. We strive to develop their understanding of the different skills required to create and perform the music we enjoy in our personal lives. By following the Charanga scheme of work, we provide pupils the opportunity to appraise, improvise, compose, and perform their own themed pieces so that they can speak about the music they know.

Implementation

We incorporate a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and cultural exploration into music lessons. Pupils engage in hands-on experiences, including singing, playing instruments, and composing. Through a variety of musical genres, they gain an understanding of different cultures and historical periods, fostering a well-rounded musical education.

The Charanga Music Curriculum has been chosen as the best way to cover the curriculum in both Key Stages 1 and 2. The curriculum is divided into thematic units that follow five key strands which run throughout the scheme of work. They are:

  • Performing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • The History of Music
  • Inter-related Dimensions of Music

The Charanga Music Curriculum ensures that pupils revisit and build upon the same skills throughout the school year, providing opportunities to recall and extend their learning with each new topic. Units of work are themed by topic, allowing pupils to develop their understanding of both musical concepts and cultural influences on music in our lives. With the support of Gateshead Music Service, pupils across the school have the opportunity for specialist music input. Pupils in Reception receive a term of class tuition with an Early Years Music Teacher, and Key Stage 2 receive Ukulele tuition throughout the year.

Collaboration and creativity are at the core of our music curriculum. Group projects, ensemble playing, and exposure to various musical traditions contribute to a holistic learning experience that extends beyond the confines of a traditional classroom.

Impact

Through music, pupils will enhance their listening skills, improve concentration, and boost their ability to work collaboratively. By exposing pupils to a rich tapestry of musical traditions, we strive to promote cultural understanding and appreciation. Music will be a tool for fostering a sense of community and inclusivity within our school, encouraging pupils to celebrate diversity and embrace the shared joy that music can bring. In the long term, we aspire to nurture a generation of individuals who not only possess musical proficiency but also carry with them the invaluable skills of creativity, teamwork, and an enduring passion for the arts.
